A simplified procedure for sensor placement guidance for small utilities
نویسندگان
چکیده
Water distribution systems are vulnerable to intentional, along with accidental, contamination of the water supply. Contamination warning systems have been developed with the goal of providing an early detection of contamination. A network of water quality sensors deployed in a system can alert an operator of a potential contamination event, but these sensors must be placed in locations that maximize their ability to detect contaminates. Robust models and algorithms have been developed to aid in the placement of sensors, but many of these methods require calibrated hydraulic/water quality models of the system. Many small utilities do not possess the financial resources or expertise to build calibrated models. Because of such limitations, a simple procedure is proposed to recommend optimal placement of a sensor without the need for a model or complicated algorithm. The procedure uses simple information about the geometry of the system and does not require explicit information about flow dynamics. While the proposed simplified method does not claim to be as reliable as currently available sensor placement software, it should accomplish the goal to provide an effective solution for small utilities with limited technical and financial resources. This paper outlines the procedure to guide utilities in the placement of a water quality sensor along with a verification study.

Sensor Placement Guidance for Small Utilities
Contamination warning systems (CWS) are strategies to lessen the effects of contamination in water distribution systems by delivering early indication of events. A critical component of CWS, online quality monitoring, involves a network of sensors that assess water quality and alert an operator of contamination. Utilities developing these monitoring systems are faced with the decision of what l...

Efforts to improve water security have led to the development of Contamination Warning Systems (CWS) aimed at providing early indication of contamination, accidental or intentional, in drinking water systems. Sensors that detect changes in water quality are a critical component. Because the extent of any monitoring system is constrained by a limited budget, focus is placed on optimizing the pla...

The damage and failure in engineering structures, especially offshore structures, and hull of ship structures, causes economic losses, human disasters, and environmental problems. Therefore, diagnosing and predicting the occurrence of failure in these structures is vital. In this situation, engineers have introduced the use of structural health monitoring operations as a suitable way to prevent...
متن کاملOPTIMAL SENSOR PLACEMENT FOR MODAL IDENTIFICATION OF A STRAP-BRACED COLD FORMED STEEL FRAME BASED ON IMPROVED GENETIC ALGORITHM
This paper is concerned with the determination of optimal sensor locations for structural modal identification in a strap-braced cold formed steel frame based on an improved genetic algorithm (IGA). Six different optimal sensor placement performance indices have been taken as the fitness functions two based on modal assurance criterion (MAC), two based on maximization of the determinant of a Fi...
متن کاملDesign and evaluation of two distributed methods for sensors placement in Wireless Sensor Networks
Adequate coverage is one of the main problems for distributed wireless sensor networks and The effectiveness of that highly depends on the sensor deployment scheme. Given a finite number of sensors, optimizing the sensor deployment will provide sufficient sensor coverage and save power of sensors for movement to target location to adequate coverage. In this paper, we apply fuzzy logic system to...
